Q: Why are dates presented in a YYYY-MM-DD format?

A: Formatting dates in order from the largest to least significant element just makes more sense than other formats where the significance is out of order. Ordering them this way makes a sorted list of dates appear in chronological order, it makes it visually easier to process when looking at lists, and it avoids the other contradictory US and European formats that were (and still are) often used. Also, this complies with the ISO 8601 standard for date formats.
